Katarina began ice-skating at age five. She was able to prove her skills and get into a Karl-Marx-Stadt special school specifically designed for gifted children. They was introduced to Jutta Muller here. Witt became a star in the year 1982 when she placed second in the World Championships at Copenhagen. Her elegance and grace caught everybody's eye at that time, and from then ahead she became the dominant figure skater in the game. Olympic success at Sarajevo, in the Sarajevo Winter Games of 1984, Katarina Witz won the ladies' bronze medal in figure skating after an intense contest. The victory she won four years earlier was even closer. Her free skate was not a success, however her gold medal came from her performances during both compulsory figures (short programme) and the compulsory figures. Witt was the first time a repeat winner in women's figure skating in the sport since Sonja Henie. Hall of Fame Witt, who made it big in the world of film and television acting, then returned to figure skating in 1994 to compete at the Lillehammer Winter Games 1994. She placed seventh but enchanted the crowd even though she didn't win a medal. Witt was inducted into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 1995.
